Post Polio Conference 2011 in New Plymouth
Keynote Speakers: Peter Sharplin, Dr Liz Falkner, Dr Lorna Fox, Jeremy Morris, Carleen GibbonsRotary Presentations: Pat & Melva Waite, and Barbara Williams
The Hon Harry Duynhoven, Mayor of New Plymouth opened the Post Polio Conference and AGM that was held in August. This was followed by Pat and Melva Waite’s presentation of their work with Rotary assisting with the vaccination of children against polio in India.
Unspoken but obvious was that we (who had polio before the vaccine was discovered) are so vocal and supportive of contemporary Polio Immunisation, both in New Zealand and overseas countries.
Some 20 or more Rotary members also attended, strengthening this unusual but supportive alliance between Rotary and Polio survivors.
Members participated in the AGM, branch reports, and in two Polio Story sessions.
Peter Sharplin gave a presentation about the services available at Queen Elizabeth Health, and there was much discussion as to why some from the South Island and Auckland northwards are excluded from DHB funding.
A panel of 4 medical experts gave presentations about Accessing GPs, Pain, Sleep, and Feet. Their topics are reported on following pages, and recorded on DVD.
On the Saturday evening, 74 people sat down to a fancy dinner, and were regaled with stories from Roger Tonkin, a local New Plymouth identity and polio survivor, and songs from another era sung by Elsie Tubby.
